A registered CBO, built by the neighbourhood it serves.
Kasarani Waste Solution began as a handful of neighbours clearing dumped plastic by hand. Today it is a registered Community Based Organization running scheduled collection, recycling education and clean-up programmes across Kasarani, Nairobi.
Make waste management reliable, dignified and community-owned.
We exist to give Kasarani households a dependable alternative to open dumping and informal burning: scheduled, affordable waste collection paired with the education and infrastructure to sort, compost and recycle what can be recovered.
We measure success not only in tonnes of waste diverted from dumpsites, but in the number of local people, mostly young collectors and sorters, earning stable income from work that used to be unpaid and irregular.
A Kasarani where no waste stream is unmanaged.
We look forward to a Kasarani where every household has access to segregated collection, every school teaches the 3 Rs, and a permanent materials recovery point processes recyclables locally instead of exporting the problem elsewhere.

How a wheelbarrow became a registered CBO.
-
Informal beginnings
A handful of Kasarani neighbours begin clearing dumped plastic by hand, using a single borrowed wheelbarrow to move sorted material to the nearest buyer.
-
Residents shape the model
An open community meeting asks residents what would get them to separate and hand over waste. Their answers, fixed schedules, transparent fees, visible impact, become the blueprint we still use.
-
Official CBO registration
The Directorate of Social Development registers Kasarani Waste Solution as a Community Based Organization, Reg. No. DSD/47/280/02/29970, giving the group legal standing to sign agreements and manage funds transparently.
-
Testing what works
A public recycling bin pilot in Hunters teaches hard lessons about unattended collection points, shaping today's estate-based and buy-back models instead.
-
Buy-back & schools programme launch
The plastic buy-back initiative and school recycling curriculum both launch, adding direct income and youth education to the core collection service.

Six villages, growing
Door-to-door collection now covers six Kasarani villages, a small paid team runs daily operations, and plans for a permanent materials recovery point are underway.
Run by an elected committee, accountable to members.
Kasarani Waste Solution is governed by an executive committee elected by registered members in line with our constitution, covering the roles of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Programmes Coordinator. The committee meets monthly to review operations, finances and expansion plans.
Day-to-day work, collection, sorting, buy-back and training, is carried out by a small team of paid local collectors and sorters, supported by community volunteers for clean-up drives and school sessions.
As a registered CBO, we operate within Nairobi County's solid waste bylaws and report to the Directorate of Social Development in line with our registration obligations. We welcome enquiries from residents, county officers or partner organisations about how we are structured or funded.
